Belia Biesheuvel arrived in the Findhorn Community in September 1996 to participate in the three months Essence of the Arts in the Community Course. During this course she participated in a two week pottery module and fell in love. It was the first time she touched clay, having been an Opera Singer until this time.
At completion of the course she approached Brian Nobbs, the then resident potter in the Findhorn Pottery and asked to be his apprentice. He said yes, and Belia started her ceramics career. Eight and a half years later Brian has retired and Belia has taken over the responsibilities of the Findhorn Pottery and is now its resident Potter. Belia is now also the main teacher and workshop leader in the Pottery and has developed a unique method and style in helping people to connect with their inner wellspring of creativity and expression.
Belia's main inspiration comes from her connection with nature as well as listening to her inner worlds. She is also greatly influenced by her studies in Japanese Yoga and her thrown work reflects the simplicity of form and glazing of the Japanese Zen influences. Another important influence is the work of Bernard Leach and his contemporaries.
All aspects of ceramics excite her and she continues to develop her skills in all areas of producing ceramics of quality and uniqueness.
